The Kentucky Derby is held on the first Saturday in May. This year the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Louisville's Churchill Downs. The derby is preceded with festivities that draw in large crowds and include a massive fireworks display, hot air balloon race, steamboat race, and many other activities. The Kentucky Derby draws an average of 150,000 well-dressed horse racing enthusiasts yearly. Attendants range from Hollywood celebrities to members of the royal family and all the way down to general admission party goers whooping it up in the infield. Attention to Derby style is a must. The Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby.
